How Durkin’s Started in 2008
Michael Durkin grew up in Plano and worked at a local pizza restaurant as a teenager. After earning a business degree at Texas Tech he worked at Hard Rock Café and in “semi-fine dining” before opening his own place. Community Impact’s 2016 profile describes his goal as bringing back the original pizza restaurant: no gimmicks, no in-store entertainment, just pizza made to order.
That idea is still how we run the kitchen. The dough is made fresh every day with unbleached, unbromated flour, and every pizza is baked to order.
How It Grew
The neighborhood took to it. By 2016 Durkin’s had grown past one restaurant and a team of about 45 people, and the signature item was the Pizza Topping Sandwich, still known as the P.T.S. Students from nearby Collin College and local families made it a regular stop, and a 2018 student review called it family-friendly with an 80s-style look.
A New Chapter: 2022
In 2022 a group of women who wanted to own and run a business bought Durkin’s Pizza from Michael. We kept what people loved about the place, the fresh dough, the P.T.S. and the friendly neighborhood feel, and added ideas of our own. Over the years other Durkin’s locations, including Frisco, have closed. West McKinney is where it began, and it is the Durkin’s you can visit today.
What We Brought to the Menu
Since 2022 we have added dishes of our own:
- Indian fusion pizza: desi-style pizzas such as paneer tikka and chicken tikka.
- Baked wings in eight sauces.
- Cakes for dessert, including our Red Velvet Cake.
